Where does it lead?
This course gives students the qualification and portfolio for entry to degree level Design courses.

Entry requirements
The programme is available for domestic students aged 16 years or older; and who hold a Level 3 qualification in Arts and Design, or NCEA (Level 3). Prospective students without a qualification can contact the school to discuss other options to demonstrate equivalent skills and knowledge.

What’s in the course?

Students study a range of subjects including visual communication, design thinking and critical thinking, fashion design processes, textiles and pattern tools and presentation skills for fashion design.

 

Students learn:

  • Creative processes and visual communication skills to communicate design ideas using a variety of techniques and media.

  • Design skills and technologies and how to apply them in various design activities including; Creating a 3 Piece Collection, Fashion House Branding and Conceptual Design.

  • Use industrial sewing equipment and the latest digital media tools from Adobe to realise your designs.

  • How the fashion design industry has developed and identify future opportunities.

  • How to work and talk like a professional designer including how to manage creative processes, work to deadlines, present and critique design work and respect copyright laws and cultural and ethical boundaries.

What is achieved?
On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Apply fundamental design processes to conceptualise and clarify solutions to fashion design briefs.

  • Apply the Elements and Principles of Design.

  • Communicate design concepts visually, orally and in written form.

  • Write a design brief.

  • Apply fundamental textiles and sewing skills to realise fashion designs.

  • Demonstrate fundamental work practices in fashion design.

  • Demonstrate understanding of legal and ethical considerations in design (including Copyright Law, Cultural Appropriation; especially in relation to the Treaty of Waitangi).

  • Understand employment opportunities in the fashion design industries.

  • Understand history of fashion design in New Zealand and Internationally.

  • Select, present and reflect upon own and others work.
